The City of Stuttgart Public Works Department is a department within the City of Stuttgart which consists of the Street Department and the Solid Waste Management System. The Street Department's duties include but are not limited to the following: overlaying streets, repairing potholes in the streets, installing drainage pipe, picking up limbs and landfill debris with the knuckle-boom truck, tearing down and removing the debris from condemned buildings, mowing ditches, etc., and sweeping the streets. The Solid Waste Management System's duties include but are not limited to the following: two residential garbage pickups per week, one to five pickups per week for businesses, and picking up limbs and landfill debris with the knuckle-boom truck. We also operate a Class 4 landfill where residents and businesses may dispose of their landfill debris such as wood, metal, furniture, appliances, etc. There is also a permitted compost area where yard waste such as limbs, grass clippings, and leaves can be disposed. We have a transfer station where the garbage that is collected is taken and compacted before being transported to a Class 1 landfill. We have containers located at the landfill and the transfer station for recyclable items such as appliances (compressors & freon must be removed before disposal), metal, and tires. A compactor is also located at Sixth and Maple for residents who wish to dispose of paper, magazines, newspapers, etc. to be recycled.
